There are plenty of lodging options throughout the Central Coast—but expect to pay top dollar for any rooms along the shore, especially in summer. Moderately priced hotels and motels do exist—most just a short drive inland from their higher-price counterparts. Make your reservations as early as possible and take advantage of midweek specials to get the best rates. It's not unusual for all coastal accommodations (meaning every single one) to fill completely during these busy times. It's common for hotels to require minimum stays on holidays and some weekends, especially in summer, and to double their rates during festivals and other events. Also, be aware that air-conditioning is a rarity at coastal lodgings from Pismo Beach to Big Sur, where the sea breezes keep things cool.
