This Renaissance-style cathedral embodies the idea of resurrection: it is the fifth church of St. Joseph built in San Jose (the fourth on this site). All its predecessors have perished in earthquakes and other natural disasters. The original adobe church began serving the residents of the pueblo of San Jose in 1803. The current and longest-standing incarnation, built in 1877, is a grand cathedral with stained-glass windows and murals. The basilica hosts musical performances by excellent jazz and chorale groups.
