Named for Mission Dolores, the 1791 building that's the city's oldest standing structure, this eclectic, easily navigable neighborhood is one of the liveliest. During the day, working-class Latino families go about their lives, and twentysomething hipsters browse in offbeat shops and fill cool cafés. When the sun sets, the Mission really comes alive: people descend from all over the Bay Area for destination restaurants, excellent and bargain-priced ethnic eateries, and the hippest bar scene around. If you're looking for real San Francisco nightlife and aren't put off by tattoos, piercings, and panhandlers, this may well become your favorite neighborhood (for a lively but less fashion-conscious scene, head to North Beach). At night the Mission can be sketchy, and parking can be difficult. For the sake of safety, stick to main streets, where all the action is anyway. For your sanity, either take a cab or BART it.
