Essentially a tony residential neighborhood of spiffy pieds-à-terre, Victorian flats, Edwardian cottages, and boxlike condos, Russian Hill also has some of the city's loveliest stairway walks, hidden garden ways, and steepest streets—brave drivers can really have some fun here—not to mention those bay views. Locals flock to Polk and Hyde streets, the hill's main commercial avenues, for their excellent neighborhood eateries and fantastic window-shopping.
