Original Joe's Review
Looking straight out of an episode of Mad Men, this North Beach institution is full of retro charm. Black Formica tabletops, checkerboard floors, and red leather booths provide the backdrop, but it's the little details like napkins with buttonholes that give the impression this restaurant has been around forever. (Yes and no, the restaurant has been around since 1937, but this location opened in 2012.) Pot roast and five different veal dishes add to the nostalgia on the meat-heavy menu. The hamburger steak—another throwback—is seasoned to perfection. Save room for the butterscotch pudding: an all-cream confection topped with whipped mascarpone and sea salt.
