San Francisco Restaurants

Helmand Palace

Updated 05/02/2013

Fodor's Review

Years ago, this popular—and popularly priced—restaurant was uprooted from a scruffy block of Broadway in North Beach to a smaller Van Ness address and added "Palace" to its name; but everything else—authentic Afghan cooking and a handsomely outfitted dining room—has been preserved. Highlights of the reasonably priced menu include aushak (leek-filled ravioli served with yogurt and ground beef), sweet baked pumpkin with yogurt-and-garlic sauce, and the half

lamb rack with sautéed eggplant and rice served on Afghan flat bread. Basmati rice pudding, perfumed with cardamom and pistachio, is an exotic finish.
