Don't be put off by Helmand's address on a rather scruffy block of Broadway. Inside is a world away, with authentic Afghan cooking served in a setting of white table linens and Afghan carpets. Highlights include aushak (leek-filled ravioli served with yogurt and ground beef), pumpkin with yogurt-and-garlic sauce, and any of the lamb dishes, in particular the kebab strewn with yellow split peas and served on Afghan flatbread. Basmati rice pudding, perfumed with cardamom, is an exotic -- and satisfying -- finish. The buffet lunch at $10 is a deal.

We enjoyed our meal here and thought it was a good value. The atmosphere isn't the greatest, but the food is really good and portions are large and the service was very good as well.
