This fully chromed destination is a far cry from the no-frills diner of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks." Fog City has all the trappings of a luxurious railroad car: wood paneling, huge windows, and comfortable booths. The menu is both classic and contemporary and includes mac-and-cheese made with Gouda, ham, and peas; fried salt-and-pepper squid with chili-lime sauce; mussels in a mild coconut curry; thick burgers with fries; and a towering lemon-meringue pie. Locals complain of too many out-of-towners, but plenty of folks who call San Francisco home fill the booths at lunch and dinner.
