The name conjures up an image of a dark, smoky bar with a piano player, but this Cantonese restaurant is actually as bright as a new penny. On the lower level (entrance on Kearny Street) is a no-tablecloth dining room that's packed at lunch and dinner. The classier upstairs space (entrance on Commercial Street) is a favorite stop for Chinese businessmen on expense accounts. The street-level room on Kearny is a comfortable spot to wait for a table to open. A menu with photographs helps you pick from the many wonderful, sometimes pricey, always authentic dishes, such as salt-and-pepper Dungeness crab, drunken squab, and steamed shrimp-stuffed tofu.

On one of my first trips to SF, the hotel concierge strongly recommended that I try R&G. Since she is a native San Franciscan, and also Chinese, I trusted her. She was right, and I have been back there several times ever since. Nothing fancy (it is in Chinatown after all), but the quality of food is excellent and more importantly, authentic (rivaling the food I am accustomed to in Hong Kong).

Every time we are in San Francisco we make time to go to R&G Lounge to eat. It is the best Chinese restaurant we have been in the USA. Their prices are reasonable and there are many food choices. It is clean and the service is fast. Be sure to get the salt and pepper scallops, one of our favorites.
