Phoenix Hotel Review

A magnet for the hip at heart and ultracool—Little Richard, Elijah Wood, Sean Lennon, and members of R.E.M. and Pearl Jam have stayed here—the Phoenix isn't the best choice for those seeking peace and quiet (or anyone put off by the hotel's location, on the fringes of the sketchy Tenderloin District). All guest rooms were spruced up in 2012 to continue the retro theme with bamboo furniture, fresh white bedspreads, new carpet, desks, and original pieces by local artists as well as modern amenities like flat-panel TVs and iPad/iPod docking stations. And all suites, deluxe, and superior rooms have had their bathrooms redone of late. Standard rooms face the courtyard, a warm, azure-tile pool, and a sculpture garden. In the evenings the crowd from the überhip Chambers eat + drink populates the cabanas and pool. The friendly staff is as cool as you'd expect.
