Fodor's Review

Service and hospitality have been points of pride at this hotel since its 1914 opening, when room rates started at $1 a night. Though the compact rooms are attractively furnished in classic English style with walnut furniture and olive and mustard linens, they can feel a bit stuffy, dark, and cramped; baths and closets are minuscule. Service is excellent, though, and the front-desk and concierge staff cater to your every whim: they can book anything from a Fisherman's

Wharf tour to a dinner reservation. For a slightly higher rate you can enjoy breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening bar service next to the red-carpet lobby, or kick back in the comfortable, pub-style lounge.

Small and eccentric, but the people are good

I made a reservation at the King George Hotel at the recommendation of a friend of mine, who stays here semi-regularly when he's in town for business. It was in a perfect location for me, as a conference I was in town for was less than 5 blocks away. First, the good: The service is very friendly and responsive, and ready to help if you need it. There's 24-hour room service (though it's fairly limited fare, consisting mostly of greasy griddle type

food), it's quiet, and there is an in-house bar/restaurant. However, there are a few negatives. The rooms are extremely small; my room really felt like something you'd find in London, with 85% of the floor space being taken up by the bed. The ceilings are very low, and the color scheme is a little weird, especially considering the random quotations that are painted on the walls by the door. Plus, I had problems with my bathroom; the pipes made weird gurgling sounds almost constantly, and my toilet wouldn't flush at all the first night I stayed here. (Not to mention the absolutely dismal water pressure in the shower... there's no bathtub, either.)

Bring your own safety chain and earplugs

There is little to like about this hotel. Yes, it may be a less expensive with a good location, but you compromise safety and comfort. Security is practically nonexistent. During my first evening the front desk called at 1:00 a.m. asking if "Angel" should be sent up. Shortly thereafter, the police were yelling at someone to come down from the fire escape. Hall windows near fire escapes were wide open during the day. This is scary stuff. The

first room given to me was like a Taliban cave, with a non-locking window next to an outdoor ledge. Think twice about this hotel!

Location, location, location

Yes the rooms are small, but who cares - you're just going to sleep there, aren't you? Location is unbeatable, as evidenced by many of the pricier hotels nearby. Shopping is steps from the door, and walking distance to transit (or you can just walk everywhere). As a female travelling alone, felt comfortable staying here and would visit again.*Re: Rates - I was able to bargain my rate down a bit, because their vacancy projection at the time was not

full. Did this via email through their site. (
