¢-$$, Tenderloin
Fodor's Review:
Hitchcock's classic Vertigo was set in this ornate hotel and Kim Novak, who played Judy Barton in the film, actually stayed in Room 301 (in Summer 2008, the hotel's name will change to Hotel Vertigo). Inside, the high-ceiling lobby leads to moderately sized rooms with huge closets, which are currently being completely renovated. Well-known singers and comedians perform nightly at the popular Empire Plush Room cabaret. Although the block includes several apartment buildings, a fancy salon, and cafés, the neighborhood is a bit edgier than some, so be alert when walking here at night.
