$$$$, Union Square
Fodor's Review:
A cheery 1910 Beaux Arts facade and snappily dressed doormen welcome you into the plush lobby, dominated by a French inglenook fireplace, vaulted ceilings featuring whimsical murals of hot-air balloons, and large metal baobab tree dedicated to hotelier Bill Kimpton. Rooms are full of flair, with vivid stripes and colors, Chinese-inspired armoires, canopy beds, and high-back upholstered chairs. Outer rooms have bay-window seats overlooking the bustling theater district. If you didn't bring a pet, request a "companion goldfish." Guests have cheered the hotel's staff for its "amazing service" and "attention to detail." The ornate Grand Café and Bar serves a blend of French and Californian cuisine. You also receive complimentary access to the recently redone Equilibrium Spa, where you can soak, steam, or bake 6 AM-10 PM.
