Serious shoppers head straight to Union Square, San Francisco's main shopping area and the site of most of its department stores, including Macy's, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Also here are the Virgin Megastore, the Disney Store, and Borders Books, Music & Cafe. Nearby are such platinum-card international boutiques as Yves Saint Laurent, Cartier, Emporio Armani, Gucci, Hermès of Paris, Louis Vuitton, and Gianni Versace.
The latest major arrival is the Westfield San Francisco Shopping Centre (865 Market St., between 4th and 5th Sts., Union Square. 415/495-5656), anchored by Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom. Besides the sheer scale of this mammoth mall, it's notable for its gorgeous atriums and its top-notch dining options. (No typical food court here, but instead a few branches of top local restaurants.) Although the department stores and some boutiques may remain open until 9 PM and beyond, most retailers in the square don't open until 10 AM or later, so there isn't much advantage to docking in the neighborhood before then unless you're grabbing an early breakfast nearby.
