Fodor's Review:

A remnant of the days when the Presidio was an army base, this Mission-style clubhouse now doubles as a visitor center (for now) and an exhibit space. Hit the visitor center for maps, schedules of the walking and biking tours, and recaps of the Presidio's history. (The gift shop has a good selection of Bay Area books and souvenirs, like art deco-style posters and cards showing the various parks in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.) Work is underway for a new visitor center, but no opening date had been set at this writing.

The club's temporary art exhibitions explore the unique cultural identity of the American West and the Pan-Pacific, such as Japanese wood-block prints. The space also sometimes offers dance performances, lectures, and theater. And a bonus that's rare in San Francisco: ample free parking.

  • Open: Visitor center daily 9-5; exhibit space Tues.-Sun. 10-4
