Performing- and visual-arts organizations occupy much of this 1930s structure. Herbst Theatre (415/392-4400) hosts classical ensembles, dance performances, and City Arts and Lectures events. Past City Arts speakers have included author Salman Rushdie and comedian and author Al Franken. Also in the building are two galleries that charge no admission. The street-level San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery (415/554-6080. Free. Wed.-Sat. noon-5) displays the works of Bay Area artists. The San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum (415/255-4800. Free. Library Wed.-Fri. 11-5, Sat. 1-5; gallery Tues.-Fri. 11-5, Sat. 1-5) occupies part of the fourth floor. A small gallery hosts interesting exhibitions, but the organization functions mainly as a library and research center for the San Francisco Bay Area's rich performing-arts legacy.
