A pastiche of colonial, Queen Anne, Moorish, and Hindu opulence, lavender with turrets battling red-topped onion domes and Victorian detailing everywhere, this 1905 structure was the first Hindu temple in the West. Vedanta, an underlying philosophy of Hinduism, maintains that all religions are paths to one goal. Although the Vedanta Society's main location is the temple at Vallejo and Fillmore streets (closed Tuesday), this temple (open only Friday evening from 8 to 9) is the organization's heart.
