Built in 1907, this pub looks like a museum piece from San Francisco's Barbary Coast days. An old upright piano sits in the corner under the original stained-glass windows. Take a seat at the mahogany bar, where you can look down at the white-tile spittoon. An adjacent room holds the handmade copper brewing kettle used to produce a dozen beers -- with names such as Pony Express -- by means of old-fashioned gravity-flow methods.

Limited choices and small location. Rogue Ale House on Union (just off Columbus in North Beach) is head and shoulders better. Same prices, better beer.
