The 10-ton, 70-foot-tall sculpture, a bright-red steel work with a crown that moves gracefully in the wind, soars above South Beach Park. The artist, Mark di Suvero, came to San Francisco in 1941 as an eight-year-old immigrant from Shanghai -- his father was a naval attaché for the Italian government -- and later worked as a welder on the city's waterfront. A half block southwest of the sculpture is AT&T Park, the home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team.
