Stand on the Mission Street border of Yerba Buena Gardens and look across the way—rising next to St. Patrick's is the new home of the latest major museum to land in this neighborhood. "Starchitect" Daniel Libeskind's state-of-the-art building is due to open in late spring 2008. The new structure joins a 1906 power station with giant, blocky shapes sheathed in bright blue steel panels. How this mash-up turns out remains to be seen. When the main center reopens, it will show a series of temporary exhibits that often focus on political themes. These can be controversial but offer insight to anyone interested in contemporary Jewish life. At this writing, the museum was using a temporary space on Steuart Street for smaller shows.
