This is no place for anyone living paycheck to paycheck. In one of San Francisco's most fashionable residential neighborhoods, this small, smart eatery, housed in a former apothecary, caters to folks with fat pocketbooks who can make reservations weeks in advance. Michael Tusk, who has cooked at the legendary Chez Panisse and Oliveto, oversees the kitchen, where he uses only the finest local ingredients to turn out his Italian-inspired cuisine. The menu changes daily, featuring a delicious selection of seasonal dishes, such as a pork trio—loin, belly, and sausage of pork with chestnut puree, pici, or handmade Tuscan strand pasta with goose ragù, and veal rib with black chanterelles and fontina. The wine list is top-notch but pricey, and the service is professional and friendly.

Dined here this past weekend for the second time in a month, this time dining at the chef's table which was truly an awesome experience. The chef created some wonderful dishes some off the regular and tasting menu, other items made just for our table. The restaurant has a nice selection of wines from around the world, a very nice French selection, particularly in the reds, and the cheese cart and deserts are outstanding. The service was impeccable, the staff most accomodating and both ocassions were truly enjoyable dining experiences. My new favorite restaurant in san francisco and I look forward to my next visit

nice ambience; quiet enough to have conversation; several spectacular appetizers; v good to great pasta and entrees; modest but great selection of wines (more usa/french than italian) with very helpful sommelier; despite the cost, a place i would return to for special occasions
