$-$$, Chinatown
Fodor's Review:
Opened in 1913 as the Columbo Hotel, this lodging on the busy border between Chinatown and North Beach has rooms and suites decorated in a blend of Italian and Chinese styles, with Florentine wall coverings and Ming-style furniture. Old-fashioned wooden venetian blinds cover the windows, and baths have polished granite countertops. Top-floor rooms have nice views of Coit Tower and North Beach. Be warned: The smallest rooms have teensy closets and bathrooms, so ask for the most spacious accommodations you can get. A multilingual staff serves morning pastries and beverages in the mezzanine area, and there's self-parking beneath the building.
