More and more people from around the country are discovering this once sleepy stretch of sand thanks to a new Marriott Autograph Collection hotel right on the beach. The 3.5-mile-long beach is a great place for long walks and bird-watching—more than 370 species can be spotted here. The Boca Rio beach break is excellent; there are year-round lifeguards, two parks with covered picnic areas, two playgrounds, and volleyball and basketball courts. Sea 180, the restaurant at the new Pier South Resort, serves Baja-Med cuisine steps from the surf. The wooden fishing pier has views of Mexico to the south and Point Loma to the north. In July the beach is the site of the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. Amenities: lifeguards, food and drink, parking (fee), showers, toilets. Best for: surfing, swimming, walking.
