Fodor's Review

The former residence of John Spreckels, the original owner of North Island and the property on which the Hotel Del Coronado stands, is now a popular hotel. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings at 11 the Glorietta Bay Inn is the departure point for a fun and informative 1½-hour walking tour of a few of the area's 86 officially designated historic homes. It includes—from the outside only—some spectacular mansions and the Meade House, where L. Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz, wrote additional Oz stories.
