Understated elegance is the theme of this genteel old resort, designed in 1924 by Lilian Rice. Guest rooms, all completely redone in 2007, are in red-tile cottages spread around the property's 20 lushly landscaped acres. There are now skylights, Saltillo tile or hardwood floors, original paintings, oversize showers, granite countertops in the bathrooms, and private patios with fireplaces. Some decor is modern and some is in keeping with the historic theme of the property.
The inn offers many services; the most coveted may be the chance to play golf at the exclusive Rancho Santa Fe Country Club just up the road.
