Expect to wait an hour or more for weekend breakfast at this trendy Hillcrest eatery, whose walls display photos of farm machinery and other icons of Middle America, but whose menu takes an up-to-the-minute look at national favorites. The oversize portions are the main draw here; at breakfast, huge platters carpeted with fluffy pancakes sail out of the kitchen, while at noon customers favor the overflowing chicken potpies crowned with flaky pastry. The parade of old-fashioned good eats continues at dinner with hearty meat and seafood dishes, including the grand sage-flavored fried chicken, bacon-flavored waffles, and hot-maple-syrup combinations.

I am shocked that fodor's would star this restaurant. Indeed the platters are huge and so is the amount of food. But I would gladly give half of it back in exchange for more flavor, better execution of the dish, and less money put out. If you want a great breakfast go to The Cottage in La Jolla!
