This cheerful eatery with an outdoor patio bustles with office workers and members of San Diego's small but active Greek community. Appetizers such as the flaming cheese dish called saganaki, hummus, and stuffed grape leaves are particularly tasty. Entrées include arni psito (roast leg of lamb), a very convincing rendition of eggplant moussaka, and the house Greek pasta, with garlic, onion, and cheese. The baklava (a layering of crisp phyllo pastry, nuts, and honey) or Greek rice pudding makes an excellent dessert. Athens Market Taverna and the ever-present owner Mary Pappas seem as timeless as Greece itself, and the place remains a local classic.
