There's a brisk East Coast air to this artsy, urban bakery and café that put itself on the map by being one of San Diego's first and best artisan bread bakers. Owner Charles Kaufman is a former New Yorker and filmmaker, who gave Bread & Cie a sense of theater by putting bread ovens imported from France on center stage. The mix includes warm foccacia covered in cheese and vegetables, crusty loaves of black olive bread, gourmet granola with Mediterranean yogurt, bear claws, and first-rate cinnamon rolls. Lunch on house-made quiche, paninis filled with pastrami, turkey, and pesto, or Brie and honey, washed down with tea, coffee, upscale soft drinks, beer, or wine.
