Santa Ysabel,Mission Santa Ysabel

Towns, Julian

Fodor's Review:

The Santa Ysabel Valley, where three Native American tribes live, looks pretty much the way the backcountry appeared a century ago, with sweeping meadows surrounded by oak-studded hillsides. The tribes operate small farms and run cattle here, although the valley's beautiful pasturelands have been threatened by development in recent years. However, in 2000 the Nature Conservancy acquired large portions of the valley to set aside as a nature preserve. The village of Santa Ysabel,Mission Santa Ysabel 7 mi west of Julian, has several interesting shops. West of Santa Ysabel, tiny is a late-19th-century adobe mission that continues to serve several local Native American communities.
