Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach Review

Much of this mile-long beach south of Mission Bay's channel entrance is a haven for volleyball players, sunbathers, and swimmers. The area around the municipal pier at the southern end is a hangout for surfers and transients. The pier stays open 24 hours a day for fishing and walking. There's a restaurant about halfway out, and more places to grab a snack can be found on the streets near the beach. Swimmers should beware of strong rip currents around the main lifeguard tower. There's a dog beach at the northern end; during summer there can be as many as 100 dogs running in the sand. For picnic areas (with fire rings) and a paved path, check out Ocean Beach Park, across from Dog Beach. Amenities: lifeguards, parking (no fee), showers, toilets. Best for: surfing, swimming, walking.
