$$$-$$$$, Escondido
Fodor's Review:
Sprawling over 600 acres of rugged, oak-studded hillside, this resort, built by bandleader Lawrence Welk in the 1960s, completed a makeover in 2005 that transformed it into a time-share property. Fully furnished and appointed, one- and two-bedroom villas are rented to nonowners when available. Amenities include fireplaces, hot tubs, original art, and balconies or patios. The resort complex is family friendly with abundant children's activities, although parents must supervise. A museum displays Welk memorabilia and the Lawrence Welk Theater presents a popular year-round season of Broadway musicals.
