A boutique hotel occupying a coveted corner in Del Mar, just steps from restaurants, shopping, and the beach, L'Auberge del Mar completed a major renovation in 2008 that transformed it from a French château to a sophisticated beach estate. The new look is bright and airy with an outdoor feel, even when you're indoors. Pristine white walls throughout public areas and rooms contrast with dark wood floors and furnishings. Ample rooms surround the Waterfall Terrace, where guests gather for informal meals and drinks. Accented by sea grass colored walls and carpeting, most rooms have balconies or patios, huge armoires holding flat-screen TVs, shell sculptures, and a collection of art and design books. Plantation shutters add to the airy ambience, and spacious marble bathrooms hold step-in showers. L'Auberge is home to one of San Diego's top celebrity chefs, Paul McCabe, who opened his signature restaurant, Kitchen 1540, in late 2008. Pros: Sunset views from the Waterfall Terrace, excellent service, walk to the beach. Cons: Even with good soundproofing the Amtrak train can be heard as it roars through town, adult atmosphere, ground-level rooms surrounding the terrace are very public.
