A trip to Bernardo Winery feels like traveling back to early California days; some of the vines on the former Spanish land-grant property have been producing grapes for more than 100 years. The winery was founded in 1889 and has been operated by the Rizzo family since 1928. Besides the wine-tasting room and shop selling cold-pressed olive oil and other gourmet goodies, there's a restaurant, the Cafe Merlot, serving lunch daily except Monday. About a dozen shops offer apparel, home-decor items, and arts and crafts. If you're lucky, the glassblowing artist will be working at the outdoor furnace. The winery is open daily 9-5; the shops are open Tuesday-Sunday 10-5.
