Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park

Historic Districts / Sites, Carlsbad

Fodor's Review:

The Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park was a real working ranch with 600 head of cattle owned by actor Leo Carrillo, who played Pancho in the Cisco Kid television series in the 1950s. Before Carrillo bought the spread, known as Rancho de Los Kiotes, in 1937, the rancho, occupying portions of a Spanish land grant, was the home of a band of Luiseno Indians. Carrillo's hacienda and other buildings have been restored to reflect the life of the star when he hosted his Hollywood friends for long weekends in the country. Four miles of trails take visitors through colorful native gardens to the cantina, wash house, pool and cabana, barn, and stable that Carrillo used. After his death in 1961, the ranch remained in the family until the 1990s, when part of the acreage was acquired by the city for a park.
