The scores of conferences held at the nearby San Diego Convention Center lured this famous, New York-based chain to open its 30th location just around the corner from Petco Park. The new building is designed to look old, and almost succeeds, and the Palm's trademark decor of caricatures of entertainers and local notables helps diners pass the time while awaiting huge portions of veal, seafood (the market-priced Nova Scotia lobsters weigh 3 pounds and up), and prime steaks and chops. Lavish servings are the consistent rule, so order such side dishes as creamed spinach and crisp cottage fries with the intent to share.

If you want a great steak at a better price, go to Lou and Mickey's. This place didn't live up to the hype for me.
