For its first entry onto San Diego's hotel scene, the Kimpton boutique hotel chain redid an old warehouse, and they hit the right note with striking, high style. The lobby features a wall of lighted sea shells against an indigo background. Off to the side, a fireplace lounge offers a complimentary wine hour every afternoon and morning coffee. Guest rooms reflect this urban escape's fun side with polka-dot bed throws and zebra or leopard print hotel robes. The flat-screen TVs have DVD/CD players and connect to the Yoga Channel; Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Some rooms offer deep Japanese-style Jacuzzi tubs and some have patios opening onto the pool area, which may get noisy in the evenings -- at night, the pool rocks with a rollicking party scene at J6Bar, lighted by fire pits and illuminated palm trees. And check out the Fez Room, with a wall of fezes, in the hotel's restaurant, Jsix, which offers a diverse, creative menu. All this is complemented by Kimpton's excellent service.
