Plaza del Pasado

Fodor's Review:

Found within the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, the Plaza del Pasado has the easy feel of Old California. Friendly shopkeepers dressed as Californios host a collection of boutiques and eateries around a flower-filled square, which has been designed in keeping with Old Town's early California days, from 1821 to 1872. Similarly, the nearly dozen shops stock items reminiscent of that era. Stroll through shops such as Tienda Nueva, a gift shop with resort wear, hats, and dolls; Casa de Serrano, for candles, Mexican crafts, earthenware, and ceramics; Casa de Moreno-Marron, selling jewelry; and La Roperia, for vintage-style clothing and hats, Spanish shawls, and fans. Rudolph Schiller's Bookstore sells quill pens, inkwells, replications of old maps, and lots of books on local history. La Panaderia offers baked goods made using early Mexican cooking methods. A restaurant, Casa de Reyes, serves Mexican food. Shops are open daily 10-10, April-December; 10-6 January-March.
