Fodor's Review:

The former residence of John Spreckels, the original owner of North Island and the property on which the Hotel Del Coronado stands, is now a popular hotel. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings at 11 it's the departure point for a fun and informative 1 1/2-hour walking tour of a few of the area's 86 officially designated historic homes. Sponsored by the Coronado Historical Association, the tour focuses on the Glorietta Bay Inn and the Hotel Del Coronado across the street. In addition, it includes -- from the outside only -- some spectacular mansions and the Meade House, where L. Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz, wrote additional Oz stories.

  • Cost: $12 for historical tour
  • In-room: kitchen (some), refrigerator, Internet.
  • In-hotel: restaurant, pool, laundry service, bicycles, parking (free), no-smoking rooms.
  • Credit Cards: AE, MC, V
