Fodor's Review:

Try for a table by a fireplace on the covered terrace, but the contemporary cuisine tastes just as good anywhere in the spacious and handsome eatery. Instead of cooking the carnitas (in this case, chunks of pork) the traditional way, simmering them in well-seasoned lard, Zocalo braises them in a mixture of honey and Guinness beer. Recommended starters include artichoke fritters and crisp shrimp skewers with pineapple-mango relish. The seafood platter features grilled scallops, shrimp, and whitefish in chimichurri sauce. This is one of the best bets in Old Town.

This is truly a wonderful restaurant, but don't go expecting refried beans and rice. It is pretty upscale, but casual too. The quality of food is very high. THink artichokes fritters, grilled shrimp, crab enchiladas, a wonderful huge salad. Nothing is greasy. You can actually eat very healthy here. And Wed is 1/2 price on wine!

welcome addition to the choices in old town area. very good food and service; can be a bit rowdy but it's a tourist area. 1/2 price wine on wednesdays makes it a great deal for us business folks and tourists alike. usually go back each trip to san diego,
