¢-$, French, Coronado
Fodor's Review:
There's always a dish of water for canine pals on the terrace of this oh-so-French café a block from San Diego Bay. In France, a "tartine" is a toasted length of baguette, sometimes simply buttered, sometimes turned into a sandwich. At Tartine, these can be as hearty as a ham-and-Brie combo slathered with grain mustard, or as pinky-in-the-air as a layering of Gorgonzola cheese, walnuts, mache, and sliced pears. Other sandwiches, along with clever salads, an oft-beguiling soup of the day, and a pâté plate, round out the day-and-night menu. Continental breakfast commences at 6 AM, when just-baked, costly pastries silently command "Eat me!" This may be Coronado's best bet for casual but stylish fare.
