Fodor's Review:

A loose collection of galleries and boutiques occupy these old buildings, which once served as a retreat for writers, actors, musicians, and other artists. The colony dates back to 1895, when the first structures were built by Anna Held, a German-born woman who came to California as the governess of Ulysses S. Grant Jr.'s children.
