This serene resort, known from the 1930s until recently as La Casa del Zorro (House of the Fox), was renovated in 2008 by Los Angelos hotelier Greg Perlman. Under the direction of Joseph DeNucci, formerly of Miraval, the resort still pampers guests with spectacular desert scenery, luxurious accommodations, and gracious and superb service. The new owners have also built a beautifully appointed spa. You only have to walk a few hundred yards from your room to find yourself in a quiet desert garden surrounded by ocotillo and cholla or alone under the stars at night. Accommodations range from ample standard rooms to private casitas with their own pools or private outdoor hot tubs. Most rooms have original art on the walls and are appointed with wood-burning fireplaces and extra large bathrooms. Guests here have access to the private Montesoro golf course. There's a full menu of sports activities including archery, table tennis, rock-climbing, guided nature hikes, and croquet. The elegant Cimarrón serves an exquisite, seasonally based menu, while La Cantina & Fox Bar offers fresh-juice margaritas and more casual Mexican fare. Pros: Luxurious, quiet desert setting, many activities onsite. Cons: Too quiet for some.
