Formerly University Towne Center, this handy outdoor mall east of La Jolla village has more than 150 shops and 24 eateries, plus an ice-skating rink. Department stores include Nordstrom, Macy's, and Sears Roebuck. Charles David (858/625-0275) sells high-fashion women's shoes. Chuao Chocolatier (858/546-1463. www.chuaochocolatier.com), pronounced "chew-wow," is an artisanal chocolate factory named after a region in Venezuela that produces the world's most prized cacao beans. Royal Nursery (858/450-1317) sells sophisticated clothing and accessories for babies. Papyrus (858/458-1399) carries a collection of San Diego postcards, whimsical notecards, gifts, and fine stationery.
