Fodor's Review

Accolades continue to roll in for executive chef Jason Knibb—most recently crowned chef of the year by peers in the local restaurant association. His exciting seasonal menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at La Jolla’s Grande Colonial Hotel are magnets for travelers and San Diegans seeking a memorable meal in the cozy ground-floor dining room, bar, or ocean-glimpse covered patio. At night deftly executed appetizers may include Jamaican jerk pork belly with plantains

and black-eyed peas or a salad of jewel-toned beets dusted with cocoa. Mains range from halibut with fava beans and fiddlehead ferns to steaks, lamb or short ribs paired with baby vegetables. Comfort-food desserts always include a twist, like the smoked cherry sorbet with almond rice pudding. A three-course market menu or five-course “Mercy of the Chef” menu, both prix-fixe, are available for the whole table.

Outstanding dining

As guests of the hotel we had breakfast here each day and unfortunately only one dinner our first night. That dinner was a memorable meal; the service was marvelous and the food even better. Our server was very knowledgeable; she even offered me tasting portions of 3 wines so that I might have an appropriate pairing with each plate (I chose appetizers for both starter and main plate and then my husband and I shared a cheese plate for dessert.) Serving

sizes were appropriate, not "heaping;" at the end of the meal we were well satisfied, not "stuffed!" We travel a lot both in North America and Europe and that was one of the finest dining experiences I can recall. We saw the prices as most reasonable given this is a "luxury" hotel.
