Cottonwood at Rancho San Diego Golf Club. If it's your birthday, you can play for free at Cottonwood, which has two courses. The Lakes (which has 10 lakes) and Ivanhoe are both good walking courses, with nice practice putting greens. Torrey Pines Golf Course. One of the best public golf courses in the United States, Torrey Pines was the site of the 2008 U.S. Open and has been the home of the Buick Invitational (now the Farmers Insurance Open) since 1968. The par-72 South Course receives rave reviews from the touring pros. Redesigned by Rees Jones in 2001, it's longer, more challenging, and more expensive than the North Course. Tee times may be booked from 8 to 90 days in advance at 877/581–7171 and are subject to an advance booking fee ($43).
