The California State Railroad Museum operates Railtown 1897 at what were the headquarters and general shops of the Sierra Railway from 1897 to 1955. The railroad has appeared in more than 200 movies and television productions, including Petticoat Junction, The Virginian, High Noon, and Unforgiven. You can view the roundhouse, an air-operated 60-foot turntable, shop rooms, and old locomotives and coaches. Six-mile, 40-minute steam train rides through the countryside operate on some holiday weekends throughout the year.
