Red Castle Historic Lodgings Review
A state landmark, this 1857 Gothic-revival mansion stands on a forested hillside overlooking Nevada City, and is a special place for those who appreciate the finer points of Victorian interior design. Its brick exterior is trimmed with white-icicle woodwork. A steep private pathway leads down through the terraced gardens into town; there's also a well-lighted set of city stairs. Handsome antique furnishings and Oriental rugs decorate the rooms. Red Castle features a delightful afternoon tea, by request, and morning breakfast buffet that is unparalleled among Gold Country B&Bs.

Cromwell, from Ontario, Canada
We returned to the Red Castle 20 years after we had first stayed there. It remains a charming inn with an exceptional location ... as long as you don't mind climbing the steps from town. The trees have grown up, making the place shady but a little dark. Our room had a lovely verandah. Furnishings are Victorian but comfortable, and the plumbing is modern enough. Excellent breakfast.
