This grand Spanish colonial-era hotel was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Most standard rooms have an early-Spanish California look, with Mission-style artwork and dark wooden headboards. Dining is a rewarding experience, whether you choose the grand Duane's Steakhouse ($$-$$$$), famed for its maple-leaf duck breast and osso buco; Las Campanas ($-$$), where Mexican-style carnitas (shredded pork) are served in a pool of mole negro (a savory chili-and-chocolate-based sauce); or the Mission Inn Restaurant ($-$$), where you can relax next to a bubbling fountain on the Spanish patio. In 2007, the resort welcomed a fourth restaurant, Bella Trattoria, which serves southern Italian fare like wood-fired pizzas and grilled paninis. Sunday brunch here is excellent, though pricey, say locals. Pros: Fascinating historical site, clean rooms, great restaurants, on-site spa. Cons: Train noise can be deafening at night.
