Why We Like It

It’s an affordable spot that appeals to couples and provides a good location as a launchpad for larger desert adventures. The communal kitchen and outdoor firepit are nice touches to invite mingling and conversation with travel companions and potential new friends.

Fodor's Expert Review

This rustic boutique hotel features a main building with rooms and suites, and casitas. It’s a nice option for a reasonably priced hotel, located on the bend of Highway 111 just at the edge of downtown Palm Springs. It’s not family-friendly, but guests staying more than a few days will appreciate the in-room kitchenettes, community kitchen (no clean-up required!), and outdoor barbecue grills.

Room

In true California style, bedrooms are a mix of rustic, modern, and Spanish influences. Headboards are made of wrought iron, walls are covered in light-washed wood paneling, and rooms boast tons of natural light with access to the outdoors always at hand. As soon as guests check in they’ll have access to in-room complimentary drinks and snacks.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are standard with bath products by Rusk.

Lobby

The lobby is darling, with a library, community kitchen, and a computer and printer available for guest use. You’ll find hot coffee, tea, and fruit every day and guests are able to rent one of the properties cruiser bikes for tooling around town.

Pool

The heated pool and hot tub are centered in a private courtyard with details like an outdoor fire pit, poolside misters, and tiki torches spread across the patio.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Parking at the Hotel California is free and off-street. Guests can also rent cruiser bikes from inside. BUZZ, the free downtown Palm Springs shuttle, picks up within two blocks of the hotel.

Restaurants

The hip, upscale Mr. Lyon’s (2-minute walk) is across the street. For straightforward Mexican food try El Mirasol Cocina Mexicana (4-minute walk), just around the corner. A solid breakfast can be snagged at Elmer’s Pancake House (7-minute walk), the Palm Springs location of a Pacific Northwest chain of breakfast eateries.

Bars

The piano bar at Melvyn’s Restaurant & Lounge (3-minute drive) is classic Palm Springs, but keep in mind that patrons cannot wear shorts and men are required to wear collared shirts for dining room service. The wine bar at Johannes (4-minute drive) is lovely, with three-ounce pours of wine and a well-curated list (plus a lovely bar schnitzel menu). Amigo Room (4-minute drive) is decorated like the dives of the past, but the hand-crafted cocktails are anything but lowbrow.
