Palm Springs and the Desert Resorts Restaurants

Las Casuelas Nuevas

Updated 05/05/2014

Fodor's Review

Hundreds of artifacts from Guadalajara, Mexico, lend festive charm to this casual restaurant, which has an expansive garden patio. Tamales and shellfish dishes are among the specialties—expect more traditional Mexican fare, rather than California-influenced creations. The tequila menu lists dozens of aged and reserve selections, served by the shot or folded into a margarita. There's live entertainment on weekends. Another location, Las Casuelas Terraza, does business

in downtown Palm Springs.

Feels like a formula restuarant

If you like ordinary "tex-mex", this is the place. The restaurant looks like it is going to be good, but is a real disappointment when it comes to food. I'd much rather go to a taco shack.

Fun outdoor patio nice for groups

This restaurant was bustling on a weekday night in March when it was warm enough to eat outdoors. Many of the diners were large family groups. A short wait for a table included one of those light flashing devices to alert you when your table is ready. I find these a little off-putting. The menus choices were varied and included a few things that are not served at every Mexican place, such as pork with green chiles and snapper Veracruz. But you

could also get well prepared familar items, including a thick, low seasoned guacamole. The patio was pretty and festive, and included live music. The portions were very large.

Mole for midwesterners

El Mirosol in Palm Springs has more authentic food and the best Mole in town. There is the occasional celebrity sighting

Yawn!

LOUD! OK Mex if you are spoiled like me. Great if you are from Midwest or places where Taco bell passes for Mex.

Strictly run of the mill Mexican

Las Casuelas is strictly run of the mill Mexican. You can find this stuff anywhere. The only thing it has going for it is the atmosphere, which is fun, and the margaritas, which are tart and tangy. You should only come here if you want a burrito like the one you can get back home.
